    Soy Food & Isoflavone Intakes Reduce Breast Cancer Risk

    A recent study among Chinese women showed that those with the highest intakes of soy foods and soy isoflavones had a significantly lower risk of breast cancer.

    Soy food consumption and breast cancer risk has been the focus of controversial recently. A recent case-control study was conducted to assess the relationship between soy food intake and breast cancer risk according to the estrogen receptor (ER) and/or progesterone receptor (PR) status of breast cancer.
    Participants included 438 Chinese women with primary breast cancer that were matched by age and residence (rural/urban) with 438 women free of cancer. Dietary intake was assessed by face-to-face interviews using a validated food frequency questionnaire.
    Researchers observed a statistically significant inverse association between soy isoflavone and soy protein intake with breast cancer risk. The women in the group with the highest soy isoflavone intake had a 46% decreased cancer risk compared to the group with the lowest intake. Women in the group with the highest soy protein had a 38% reduced cancer risk compared to the lowest intake group. A preventive effect of soy food was found for all subtypes of ER and/or PR status of breast cancer. The inverse association was more evident among premenopausal women.
    This study suggests that consumption of soy foods and soy isoflavones may reduce the risk of breast cancer, and that the protective effects of soy do not seem to differ by ER and PR breast cancer status.

    You will read in the media that nutritional supplements cause deaths, breast cancer, expensive urine and we don’t need to take them. I suggest that you do make sure that your beliefs are based on reliable sources and not just the latest headline.  Do you need to take anti-aging supplements?
    Do you need to take anti-aging supplements?
    It is important not to take the media reports at face value – they are there to sell bad news.

    For instance, does the latest research define what supplements were taken in what doses, for how long, what was the strength, what was the bioavailability, are they balanced and what was the quality? Were the supplements from a natural source or were they artificial (a factor in the case of Vitamin E for instance)? What other factors were involved e.g. the health of the subjects before the study? Sometimes the answers to these types of questions are difficult to find.

    My belief is based on my experience, the many books about nutrition that I have read, and the doctors and scientists I have listened to.

    According to Michael Lam, MD, MPH, ABAAM: “Study after study over the past 40 years confirms that nutritional supplementation is a cheap insurance for longevity and cancer prevention if taken at the optimum dosage. Nutritional supplementation is a food. It is not giving your body something that your body does not have. It is to supplement your body’s existing level and to ensure that the proper nutrient at the proper level is available for the body at all times.
    It is an accepted fact that people have different nutritional needs based on genetics, weight, gender, age, health status, physical activity, and ability to absorb nutrients. If you don’t know what you need, the safest strategy is to err on the side of slight excess if you are in general good heath. Having a little extra of any nutrient won’t harm you. But a brief deficiency can, and a chronic will.

    Taking optimal amounts of nutritional supplements is a cornerstone and key component of any comprehensive anti-aging program. You simply cannot get enough of these nutrients from your diet for optimum health, and having inadequate amounts can kill you.”

    My parents had a healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately my Dad did smoke cigarettes but stopped when I was born. They lived in Australia which is conducive to growing your own fruit and vegetables in the back garden. So they ate organically from their garden (my Mum was such a great cook that my Dad preferred eating meals at home), they had moderate exercise (swimming and walking) and had a mostly stress-free life. But that didn’t stop them suffering from arthritis, heart disease and in my father’s case – prostate cancer. My mother suffered from high blood pressure for many years and was on expensive BP medication. My mother died at the age of 71 from a heart attack and my dad died at 77 from the prostate cancer. Sadly, they have missed out on seeing their grandchildren reach adulthood. As far as my beliefs are concerned, I now know that eating healthfully isn’t enough.

    Many doctors do not encourage their patients to take supplements because they only know about over-the-counter (OTC) ones. Most of the OTC supplements are made to food grade standards and only come up to Recommended Daily Allowance doses – which is just not good enough. What we need to look for, are advanced quality, GMP standard, optimal dosage supplements. Also, once-a-day tablets are a waste of money.

    “The FDA looks at nutritional supplements the same way it looks at foods. This entire industry is really not regulated, and a nutritional company can pretty much put any amount of nutrients in their tablets. In other words, the amount stated on the label is not necessarily what is in the tablet. Unless a nutritional company voluntarily produces its nutritional supplements in a pharmaceutical-grade method, the consumer has no assurance that what is on the label is in the tablet.     The optimal level of vitamin E is 400 IU. What do we need to eat to get 400 IU of vitamin E? You would only need to eat 33 heads of spinach or 28 pounds of butter or 5 pounds of wheat germ each day to get that much vitamin E!

    The optimal level of vitamin C is about 1000 to 2000 mg daily (the RDA is only 60 mg). You would only have to eat 18 large oranges or 80 avocados to get that amount of vitamin C from your diet.

    Do you have any healthy aging strategies? I am a baby boomer and I am feeling great. However I see other boomers who are starting to crumble. Just recently a friend of mine, who is well under 50, has been diagnosed with pre-cancerous cells and will shortly be undergoing an operation. Her youngest daughter is 6 years old. Who do you know who has suffered from cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and stroke? I have had two friends my age die from breast cancer and ovarian cancer in the last two years. What can we do to stay younger longer so that we can live life to the full?

    There are lots of commonsense things that we know about and can do (and should do).

    Here are ten healthy aging strategies:

    1. Enjoy sunshine! We need to spend 15 to 20 minutes in bright sun to allow our bodies to make the hormone Vitamin D. If you live in temperate zones (37 degrees north and south of the equator) consider topping up with a good quality Vitamin D3 product 1000 to 5000 iu daily.

    2. Eat fresh non-processed food. Eat a variety of fruit and veggies every day. Cut out sugar. Eat good quality protein in small amounts. Here is a few smoothie and juice recipes that are easy to make.  Dr Steven Gundry has written a book called ‘Diet Evolution’ which explains why our diets are so very important.

    3. Drink plenty of good water. Some people say they don’t like the taste. I have installed a reverse osmosis water filter and it not only makes the water taste delicious, chemicals and toxins have been removed. On top of flushing toxins out of the body, a major BENEFIT of drinking water is to carry NUTRIENTS into the cells of the body. In addition to helping nutrients get into the cells where they are needed, the benefit of drinking water in adequate amounts also helps to keep the CELLS well …hydrated so they can FUNCTION properly and efficiently. Cut down or stop drinking sugary drinks (and coffee and alcohol too).

    4. Exercise. Find something you enjoy – walking, dancing, cycling, gardening, jogging, pilates, zumba, playing golf…add a comment and tell us what you do for exercise and why you like it.

    5. Rest. Controlling stress is a big factor in our well-being. Find something that gives you peaceful enjoyment that releases you from life’s stresses. It may be meditation, listening to music, curling up with a good library book. What do you do for quiet enjoyment?

    7. Take advanced quality nutritional supplements. Taking once-a-day supplements will not make you healthier. Nor do supplements that are at Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA/RDI) doses.     8. Check your attitude. Do you look for solutions or do you focus on the problems? Do you look for good in people or do you enjoy criticising? Do you work at being positive or negative?     9. Have fun! Look after your friends and family. Make new friends. Share, laugh and cry together. Contribute to your community – giving is far more rewarding than receiving.

    10. Last but not least – visit your dentist. Yes, attractive looking teeth make us look younger and not only that, good oral health is vital for our health. This is a tip that is often overlooked. My journey over the last nine years has awakened me to the health benefits of good oral health. And on top of that, I am married to a dentist who has also been educating me about the toxic nature of mercury amalgam fillings. By going to your dentist regularly you will be helped to keep gum disease and tooth decay at bay. Bacteria in the mouth contributes to inflammation which may lead to heart disease and diabetes.     What is it about hormones and aging? Are your hormones giving you grief?

    Women are the doorway to life and our hormones play a vital role in that process.

    Many health issues are caused by an imbalance of those pesky hormones in our bodies. It is important to ask your doctor to check out your levels of oestrogen and progestrone if you have any of the following symptons. And I want to place a warning here – if your doctor does detect an imbalance then it is important that only natural hormones are prescribed – synthetic hormones can be toxic and make your symptons worse.

    These are some symptons that may be a warning sign that you have a hormonal imbalance:
    Insomia, weight gain, lumpy breasts, anxiety, vaginal dryness, night sweats, painful intercourse, memory problem, bladder infection, lethargic, hot flashes, puffiness & bloating, abnormal pap smear, rapid weight gain, mood swings, migrains, foggy thinking, red face flush, gall bladder, weepiness, acne, thinning hair, ovarian cysts, PCOS, high blood sugar, debilating fatigue, low blood pressure, intolerance to exercise, brown face spots.
